Major (MAJ) Mark Weaver is Georgia Military College Prep School’s Teacher of the 2017 school year. MAJ Weaver is the Fine Arts Director and Department Chair for the Fine Arts at GMC’s Prep School. This is MAJ Weaver’s first time receiving this recognition at GMC’s Prep School. Prep School faculty members voted and selected Weaver to receive this prestigious honor. “I’m honored to be selected by my peers, especially in a school that I love and means the world to me,” said MAJ Mark Weaver, GMC Prep School’s Teacher of the Year.

In the six years that MAJ Weaver has been a part of the GMC Family, he has grown the Prep School’s Fine Arts Department into one of the best in the state! Major Weaver works tirelessly to expand the Fine Arts Programs and increase student involvement in all aspects of performing and creativity.

In addition to his dedication to the development of the arts, MAJ Weaver works diligently in all areas of the Prep School. He teaches Musical Theatre and Computer Applications during the school day before dedicating countless hours outside of the classroom preparing students for competitions, performances, and workshops.

As part of his initial expansion of programs, MAJ Weaver returned GMC to One Act Play competitions in 2011 after the school’s 10 year hiatus. Since 2011 the One Act Play program has never finished lower than second in any event and has earned three State Championship titles. In 2012, MAJ Weaver charted the school’s first Thespian Troupe, an honor organization for exemplary high school theatre programs.

MAJ Weaver is also the head coach of GMC’s Literary Team which has won six Region Championships and three consecutive State Championships. Mark encourages students to fulfill their dreams after graduation by helping students pursue careers in theatre and music and win scholarships. He also plans extracurricular activities and workshops for fine arts students including tours to New York City.

One of MAJ Weaver’s greatest gifts is his ability to see talent in young people, seek them out and draw them into his program, and when they walk out on stage, cause everyone to say, “Wow!! That can’t be who I think it is!”

MAJ Weaver also directs the Prep School’s highly acclaimed spring musicals. His productions are magical and leaves audience members with a smile on their face and a true awe that middle and high school students can put on a performance of that caliber. These performances don’t just happen, MAJ Weaver puts in countless hours after school and on weekends practicing with these students until they are comfortable in their roles and ready to give the performance of their lives.

In addition to his commitments to GMC, MAJ Weaver is a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He and his wife, Cheryl, have been married for 24 years and have three children, Joey, Krista, and Addison. They also have four grandchildren. He developed his love for education from his mother who was an educator for 35 years. MAJ Weaver believes that the arts allow students to be well-rounded, productive citizens and should always be an integral part of any world class education.

MAJ Weaver will be formally recognized as GMC Prep School’s Teacher of the Year during the Mother’s Day Parade in May.
