Published: December 09, 2011 » 0Comments | Post a Comment AMERICUS, Ga. — Adding to its mission to become the university in the state known for meeting the needs of transfer students, Georgia Southwestern State University (GSW) signed an agreement with Georgia Military College (GMC) to offer bachelor’s degrees in accounting and management via the internet. This agreement is effective immediately. Georgia Southwestern and GMC enter into this agreement to assist in the transferability of credit hours and to allow GMC graduates the opportunity to remain in their communities while completing the Bachelor of Business Administration degree online. Georgia Military students must satisfy the admission requirements of Georgia Southwestern to enter the BBA degree program. “This agreement with Georgia Military College fits very nicely into Georgia Southwestern’s vision to become the state’s transfer University of choice,” said GSW President Kendall A. Blanchard, Ph.D. “Georgia Military College graduates have been exposed to the kind of discipline, rigor, character development, and ethics programs that help to ensure they will graduate from Georgia Southwestern, serve their communities well, and make us proud.” “Our average class size is 18 students, so we’re a great preparatory school for four-year institutions,” said Maj. Gen. Peter J. Boylan, GMC president. “Georgia Southwestern offers similar sorts of opportunities. Georgia Military College students that transfer to GSW will have their basic education in place and can contribute to the mission of Georgia Southwestern.” This is GMC’s first online transfer agreement. Students who successfully complete the Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from GMC with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 will be able to start their upper division courses entirely over the Web. “This just adds to our family of external programs,” said Liz Wilson, Ph.D., dean of the GSW School of Business Administration. “We had been looking for another program that we felt would be a good two-year fit and noticed an increased number of Georgia Military students coming here. The majority of them work full time, and they are looking for a program that offers the opportunity to finish a business degree online.” Founded in 1879, Georgia Military College is a co-educational, accredited, liberal arts, junior college. Having started an online program less than a year ago for their associate’s degrees, GMC has nearly 150 students enrolled. Georgia Military has six campuses statewide, with their main campus headquartered in Milledgeville. “Our primary mission is to prepare students to transfer to a four-year institution and earn a bachelor’s degree,” said Mike Holmes, Ph.D., GMC vice president for Academic Affairs, whose daughter is enrolled in the collaborative program with GSW. “This program offers them an opportunity to stay in their community and pursue that bachelor’s degree.” Located in Americus, Georgia Southwestern State University works with many two-year colleges across the state to offer bachelor’s degrees in business, computer science, education and nursing.
