GMC Welcomes Record Number of Service Academy Prep Scholars
Georgia Military College Welcomes Record Number of Service Academy Preparatory Scholars
The Georgia Military College Corps of Cadets welcomed two additions to its Service Academy Preparatory Program in August 2019 – the U.S. Naval Academy and the U.S. Air Force Academy – along with a record number of 45 Academy Scholars. The two new service academies joined the U.S. Coast Guard Academy and U.S. Military Academy preparatory programs already established and successful at the GMC-Milledgeville campus.
“We know the quality of education. We know the training and leadership and all the ideals at GMC meld so well with what we accomplish at the Naval Academy,” USNA Foundation Chairman of the Athletic and Scholarship Program and retired Navy Rear Admiral, Thomas Lynch says.
In addition to having the largest number of Academy Scholars in the history of GMC, the Corps of Cadets ended with a record number of Scholars who received an appointment from one or more of the five Service Academies, which includes Zachery Steiner, the first-ever GMC self-prep cadet to be accepted to the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.
“We’ve got great representation now at four of the five service academies,” said Lieutenant General William B. Caldwell, IV, President of GMC. “This Scholars program has grown exponentially since we started it and we’re excited to see more students come through our program in the years to come. Our goal with this program is to grow leaders that will go on to attend one of the United States Service Academies, and to serve our country well. We are definitely making mission with that goal.
The GMC Corps of Cadets Service Academy Preparatory Program is an affiliated prep school that prepares candidates in the academic, physical training, character development, and leadership skills needed for them to excel at any of the five military service academies. The 10-month-long Service Academy Preparatory Program maintained a 100% retention rate during the 2018-2019 academic year. Instead of the usual maximum credit hours required each term, Prep Scholars must take a minimum of 18-24 credit hours in a rigorous program of studies that focus on STEM courses. They also endure a daily schedule of physical training and take time to serve others through community service.
