GMC announces 2016 Moore Family Award recipients to attend writing conference at UGA
“In wanting to help GMC, the Moore Family felt that the greatest gift would be to enhance the student writing and they’ve chosen to do that through faculty development opportunities,” said Dianne Wilcox, GMC’s Professor of English and Humanities Division Chair.
Three years ago, 15-GMC English Composition faculty traveled to UGA for the first workshop as part of their professional development. GMC faculty members are able to attend the conference through an endowment funded by the Moore Family who have a background in journalism. Former United States Department of Defense official, Powell A. Moore, is an alumnus of both the Grady College and GMC. Moore’s great grandfather, grandfather, and father were newspaper editors at the Union Recorder in Milledgeville, Ga. His great grandfather, Jere N. Moore, is one of GMC’s founders.
“The Moore Family Fund was established 20 years ago to honor the memory of our family members who were writers, journalists and teachers,” said Powell A. Moore, Founder of the Moore Family Fund. “It is intended to benefit teachers at GMC to teach students how to write clearly and acquire other capabilities.”
The Moore Family continues to sponsor the workshop for full time faculty members who teach English 101 and/or English 102. The workshop focuses on innovative writing, using technology, research, literary techniques, and tips for grading.
“I’m excited because the Moore award exposes you to a lot of what’s going on in the profession, particularly when it comes to teaching students how to write,” said Dr. Corey Stayton, Department Chair of Humanities at GMC’s Fairburn Campus and Moore Award recipient. “It exposes you not only to the university level, but you also see what your peers are doing. The idea that we get to share teaching strategies is always a plus.”
GMC’s Humanities Division Chair, Dianne Wilcox, partners with the Academic Deans from each GMC campus to select the faculty members to attend the writing conference. UGA organizers have tailored the conference to benefit GMC faculty members. The sessions at the conference this year include: “The
Writer as Entrepreneur,” “The Power of Journals,” “When Words Won’t Do: Telling Stories with Graphics,” and “Digital Magazine from Start to Finish.”
“I’m excited for the opportunity to learn from other people and have new experiences and gain things that I can bring into my classroom and help my students develop their skills as writers and as scholars,” said Analisa Ciuffetelli, Assistant Professor of Humanities at GMC’s Warner Robins Campus and Moore
Award recipient.
The conference will end with a session on using historical artifacts to inspire student writing in the UGA Special Collections Libraries. The 2016 Moore Family Award recipients are below:
