Georgia Military College Columbus Hosts Boys and Girls Club College Day
On July 14, 2015, the Boys and Girls Club of Chattahoochee County had a summer College Day for their members. Taco Bell awarded the Club a grant for the experience, and Georgia Military College Columbus was chosen to host it. Club members ranging from 8th to 12th grade made their way to the Columbus campus of GMC early in the morning. The College Day was meant to be an opportunity for the members to experience what a typical day in college might be like and to become comfortable in the setting. It was an encouraging event that got the students to really think about the reality of college and plan some goals for their futures.
Complete with Buford, the bulldog mascot of Georgia Military College, the day saw students learning in a classroom setting, eating lunch together, hanging out, and touring the campus. The classes that were prepared were designed to give the students a good grasp on college life. Some questions they might have had before the college day – What is a class like? How will I pay for it? What kinds of clubs are there? – were answered during this time. The students also enjoyed pizza and got to know some of the GMC Student Ambassadors – real college students that could tell them their experiences.
James Madden of Carver High School, age 16, said that his favorite part of the experience was the classes. He especially liked the Financial Aid class. Dominique Preer, 14, of Eddy Middle School, also liked the classes, especially “Sarah’s (Mrs. Sarah Chambers, Recruitment Coordinator) class, because we learned about why college is important.” The event was also fun for the Ambassadors. Charlene Woods of Columbus, GA, a Student Ambassador at GMC Columbus, said that she liked how the students were, “energetic and excited about their futures.”
