Dr. Stephen Barber, professor of history at Georgia Military College (GMC) Columbus Campus, is named GMC’s College Character Educator for the 2016-2017 Academic Year. Dr. Barber was selected out of 128 fulltime faculty members at GMC. He is currently in his tenth year at GMC and places special importance on character building, which is an essential component of the GMC Mission. “Character is central to all we attempt to accomplish in life,” said Dr. Stephen Barber. “It is not only essential to personal achievement and well-being, but to the public interest as well. The first ventures in public education in the United States focused on moral instruction and it remains incumbent on us to always retain that focus. We can do nothing more important for our students.”

This year, as the coach for the Columbus Campus Ethics Bowl team, Dr. Barber worked with students for weeks to prepare them for an intercampus competition held in Warner Robins. Also, Dr. Barber and one member from the Ethics Bowl team volunteered with the Literacy Alliance of Columbus, Georgia, participating in the organization’s Kindergarten Readiness program, an eight-week program that matches selected pre-K students with a volunteer for one on-one reading time. Volunteer duties for this program include reading a book with the selected student and then completing an academic activity that relates to that book.
