Georgia Military College Students to Attend National Ethics Bowl Competition in California
Four teams made up of Georgia Military College (GMC) students faced off Friday, January 30, 2015, in the GMC Ethics Bowl, hosted by the GMC Columbus campus. These teams were from GMC campuses in Milledgeville, Valdosta, Warner Robins, and Columbus. The Columbus team took second place and first place went to the team from Warner Robins. These two teams will now move on to the national Association for Practical and Professional Ethics (APPE) Two Year College Ethics Bowl in California. Says Columbus team member Armando Fernandez, “Making it to nationals is surreal, I don't think I've been hit by it yet. I know it's going to be a tough competition, but our team is ready to take it head on.”
The teams prepared months in advance to effectively answer among 12 questions about ethical issues during the Bowl. Dr. Stephen Barber, Planning Committee Chair of the event, explains, “Ethics Bowl participation enables students to converse about cultural, political, and social subjects, engage in critical thinking, conduct research, broaden their knowledge base, and embrace teamwork. These activities contribute to students becoming excellent students and productive citizens.”
The Columbus team includes members Harry Turner (of Columbus, Ga.), Brianna Shoulders (of Columbus, Ga.), Jared McPherson (of Fortson, Ga.), Armando Fernandez (of Columbus, Ga.).
The Warner Robins team includes members Brittany Aldaz (of Warner Robins, Ga.), Evander Banks (of Warner Robins, Ga.), Stephanie Warren (of Warner Robins, Ga.), Travis Batchelor (of Perry, Ga.), and Zuriel Heron (of Warner Robins, Ga.).
The APPE and GMC launched the 1st Annual APPE Two Year College Ethics Bowl in April 2013 at Georgia Military College in Milledgeville, Ga., The national competition, which is open to all two-year colleges, is in its third year and will take place at the APPE Annual Conference in Costa Mesa, Calif. on Thursday, February 19, 2015.
Georgia Military College, the only public liberal arts junior college located in Columbus, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees.
