GWYNEDD-MERCY COLLEGE RANKS IN FIRST TIER OF ITS CATEGORY IN

U.S.NEWS & WORLD REPORT’S BEST COLLEGES

Gwynedd-Mercy College earned a ranking in the first tier among Best Regional Universities in the North in the 2011 edition of Best Colleges.

The exclusive rankings, which include more than 1,400 schools nationwide, are available at www.usnews.com/colleges, and will also be published in the September issue of U.S.News & World Report, on newsstands August 31.

Over the past two decades, the U.S. News college rankings, which group schools based on categories, has grown to be the most comprehensive research tool for students and parents considering higher education opportunities.

Among the many factors weighed in determining the rankings, the key measures of quality are: peer assessment, graduation and retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources and alumni giving.

Gwynedd-Mercy College’s graduation rate of 72 percent was among the highest within its tier. The College also has a reputable freshman retention rate of 78 percent. Such high rates of retention and graduation can be attributed to the college’s supportive student service and leadership programs, strong academic offerings, campus social life and the 13:1 student/faculty ratio, which gives faculty the opportunity to spend more time with individual students and help bring each student’s future into focus.

AICUP's Economic Impact Report

How Gwynedd-Mercy College contributes to Pennsylvania's economic growth

The Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Pennsylvania (AICUP) releases a report every five years on the economic impact of Pennsylvania’s private colleges and universities. After surveying its member schools and researching U.S. Department of Commerce data, AICUP has provided a statewide impact of $16.1 billion. This impact includes creating valuable jobs and building partnerships and business opportunities within Pennsylvania.

Independent colleges and universities create 79,213 on-campus jobs in Pennsylvania, with salaries totaling $4.58 billion. In the last few years, more than $500 million was spent on construction jobs for private institutions, helping to create 3,389 construction jobs in PA.

As an active AICUP member, Gwynedd-Mercy College's presence in the Greater Philadelphia Area has created jobs, partnerships and business opportunities for local residents. The College has completed two major construction projects within the last five years. Alexandria Hall, the newest residence hall, and the Outdoor Athletic Complex were completed in 2006 and 2009. Gwynedd-Mercy College has also expanded its campuses for working adults, the Center for Lifelong Learning. The campus located in the Public Ledger Building in Center City is growing, and the campus previously located in Fort Washington, Pa., moved this year to a larger facility in East Norriton, Pa.

Gwynedd-Mercy College affiliated with 160 hospitals and health care providers in the area. In addition, the College's School of Education has provided professional, caring teachers to the five neighboring county school districts.

Many of Gwynedd-Mercy College's 2,700 current students, 450 employees and 15,000 graduates live and work in the area of the College.

NEW AUTO SHARING PROGRAM

In fall 2010, resident students will be able to drive off campus whether they own a car or not. An auto-sharing program, U-Car Share, will supply two cars on campus (one hybrid). It is a program through U-Haul designed for businesses and schools.

Once students sign up for a U-Car Share membership, which is $25, they are sent

a membership card. Then, students sign into their online accounts to reserve a day and time for the car, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Upon reservation time, students wave the membership card by the car’s windshield, causing the doors to automatically unlock. The keys are kept in the glove box. There is an hourly fee for the car reservation.

Although students can have a car on campus all four years, not all students have the privilege or financial opportunity to own a car. Students also don't have access to public transportation from campus besides the shuttle which transports them to the train station.

We hope making trips to the grocery store, mall and the many attractions in Philadelphia will become much easier for resident students!
