About This Program:

The AS in Cyber Security program will educate students so that they have a command of basic programming, networking, and information security skills, enabling them to thoughtfully participate in the decisions of the marketplace and thereby contribute to the professions, communities, and organizations to which they belong.

What You Will Learn: 

Desktop programming: 

  • Students who complete this program will be able to design and develop an object-oriented program that uses the Java programming language.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to design and develop an object-oriented program that uses the Java Swing framework for its graphical user interface.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to design and develop an object-oriented program that uses the Java class library to read and write sequential text files.

Networking:

  • Students who complete this program will be able to understand and describe the functions and interrelationships of network components, including security components.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to understand, describe, and compare standard network layered architectures, including TCP/IP and the OSI model.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to understand and describe network problem solving strategies and use basic network diagnostic tools.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to design, create, and document a network diagram that meets a given set of network requirements.

Data Structures:

  • Students who complete this program will be able to understand and describe the structure, behavior, and practical uses of a variety of standard data structures.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to understand and describe the trade-offs of space and time between different standard data structure algorithms and implementations.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to develop a practical, object-oriented, Python program that uses one or more standard data structures for its data management and retrieval.

Cyber Information Security: 

  • Students who complete this program will be able to identify key business assets, their associated threats and vulnerabilities, and produce a prioritized list of risks.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to identify security controls to address a given set of risks and to describe how their security solution provides confidentiality, integrity, availability, and a layered defense.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to outline plans for security auditing, security monitoring, and handling a given security incident, and to explain how their plans address confidentiality, integrity, and availability.
  • Students who complete this program will be able to outline plans for data backup, business continuity, and disaster recovery, and to explain how their plans address confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Program Benefits:

Earning an AS degree in Cyber Security will prepare students for employment opportunities and meet educational requirements for continuation towards a bachelor degree in cyber security or computer science. Upon completion of this degree, graduates will be able to transfer credits to a 4-year BA or BS degree program in cyber security or computer science. Cyber Security degree majors are in high demand given the need for business and defense operations to protect their systems and data from cyber attacks.
