GMC to host WWI Unity Tree Planting Ceremony

Georgia Military College to Plant Unity Tree in Memory of WWI Baldwin County Soldiers

On Friday, October 9, 2020 at 10 a.m. on the lawn of Jenkins Hall, Georgia Military College will plant a Unity Tree to honor the memory of World War I soldiers from Milledgeville and Baldwin County who passed away during the war. Currently there are two segregated WWI memorials in Milledgeville – one at Shiloh Baptist Church and the other in front of the old Baldwin County Courthouse. GMC’s intent with the planting of the Unity Tree is to desegregate the names of those who made the ultimate sacrifice during WWI and to memorialize them together in one place.

Soldiers who will be listed and honored at the memorial include:

Pvt. Eli Adams, Pvt. Augustus Austin, Pvt. Robert A. Bass, William A. Beck, Pvt. Edward Q. Brown, Pvt. Frank P. Brown, Pvt. Wesley Denson, Lt. de Bignon Vaughn Fleming, Pvt. Briscoe Ford, Pvt. Solf Giles, Pvt. Samuel Hanks, Sgt. Paul Anders Henry, Pvt. Thomas Howard Huff, Pvt. Ad King, Pvt. Furman F. Lee, Pvt. James Franklin Little, Seaman Herbert Tillman Lockey, Pvt. Morris Vinson, Pvt. Willie Warren, Wagoner Robert White, Pvt. Joseph Woodson Wood, Pvt. Walker Wright, and Pvt. John Young.

The event will be open to the media, but closed to the public. Social distancing and masks and/or facial coverings will be required. GMC will also livestream the event on Georgia Military College’s Facebook page, www.facebook.com/georgiamilitarycollege, beginning at 9:55 a.m. on Oct. 9.
