GMC Partners with Allied Arts and Independent Filmmakers
As Georgia becomes a booming location for the film industry, Georgia Military College Preparatory School (GMC Prep) has provided the Goldstein Center for the Performing Arts for the screening of six films by the Southern Circuit Tour of Independent Filmmakers. This event is free of charge and open to the community.
Leslie Peterson, Outreach Coordinator for Allied Arts, says, “Filmmaking is a nuanced art that makes use of an amazing variety of arts and skill sets and, beyond that, it supports and generates industry and jobs. Our goal is to present the community with more accessible opportunities, like the Southern Circuit Tour, to learn about the film making process and be able to be even more appreciate the end result.”
This community partnership also opens an opportunity for students at GMC. These screenings will allow them to be introduced to possible career options or hobbies, as well as develop critical thinking skills and new perspectives.
“It’s really a domino effect: experiencing the movies inspires ideas, ideas inspire conversations, conversation inspires action, and action builds better and stronger individuals and communities,” said Peterson.
At each screening, one of the filmmakers will be present for a post-screening question and answer session. Mark Weaver, GMC Prep School Fine Arts Director, says this partnership is a great opportunity for GMC Prep School students.
“Anytime you provide students with opportunities to attend artistic events or participate in master classes and workshops, they gain knowledge and new perspectives about themselves and the world around them,” Weaver said. “Having the directors on campus to discuss their vision and the process behind the films is an incredible opportunity.”
There are three films remaining on the schedule in Goldstein Center for Performing Arts:
• Bill Traylor, Chasing Ghosts on February 23, 2020 at 7 p.m.
• Picture Character on March 30, 2020 at 7 p.m.
• You Gave Me a Song - The Life and Music of Alice Gerrard on April 27, at 7 p.m.
