18-year-old Shondraya Stringer is making history at GMC’s Fairburn campus as their first dual enrollment graduate. Stringer will graduate from New Manchester High School in Douglasville, Georgia on May 26 and from GMC’s Fairburn campus on June 3. She will graduate with an Associate’s Degree in Business Administration. Stringer says it’s exciting to know that she’s making history at GMC’s Fairburn campus.
“I didn’t know that I was first student to do this,” said Shondraya Stringer. “It’s nice to be honored for that and to accomplish something that has not been accomplished yet. Taking the college courses was tough sometimes, but the professors really worked well with me.”
Stringer began taking dual enrollment courses through the “Move On When Ready” (MOWR) program at GMC’s Fairburn campus in the summer of 2016. Stringer decided to take courses through the program to get a head start on her college career. She says participating in MOWR has supported her in becoming a “college and career ready” student. She’s encouraging other high school students to also take advantage of the program.
“It’s a good opportunity to get a head start on college,” said Stringer. “As a high school student you need to develop a plan of what you’re going to do while you’re taking college courses. For me, I developed time management skills and I didn’t procrastinate.”
Stringer will start her Bachelor’s Degree in Business Management at Kennesaw State University in the fall. She’s also on track towards earning her cosmetology degree from West Georgia Technical College in the fall.
