GMC dual enrollment student receives track scholarship to Wake Forest University

(Evan Simmons will attend Wake Forest University in the Fall on a track scholarship.)

18-year-old Evan Simmons is prepared to run a new race in the next chapter of his life. In February, Simmons received a full track scholarship to Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.

“This means a lot to me,” said Evan Simmons. “I’ve been running for a long time and to go to a Division 1 school was a big goal for me. I felt like I worked hard for it. I just see myself getting better every time I touch the track.”

Simmons, a senior at Baldwin High School (BHS), has been taking dual enrollment courses in Political Science, Spanish, History, and Algebra at GMC’s Milledgeville campus. He also participates in the BHS and Georgia College & State University’s Early College program. Simmons is a standout track runner at BCHS. He excels at the 400 meter and his fastest time is 48.3 seconds. Simmons is expected to graduate high school in May with 40 college credits. He says it took discipline to balance his education and being an athlete.

“I just tried to stay focus and keep my priorities straight,” said Simmons. “I do all of my work at school, then I go to practice and come home to study.”

Simmons says one of his goals while attending Wake Forest University is to reach the Conference Finals in Track and Field during his freshman year. He says he’s excited to attend Wake Forest in the fall and plans to major in Criminal Justice or Pre-law.
