Georgia Military College (GMC) Prep School senior, Andy Watkins, has been named the 2017 Baldwin County Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Student. He was recognized at the 2017 Baldwin County STAR Student Awards luncheon sponsored by the Milledgeville-Baldwin Chamber of Commerce. As the STAR student for 2017, Watkins selected Amanda Mercer, GMC’s Prep School Advanced Placement (AP) English teacher, as his STAR Teacher. Watkins will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship for winning.
Since its creation by the Georgia Chamber of Commerce in 1958, the STAR program has honored nearly 26,000 students and the teachers selected as the most influential to their academic achievement. High school seniors must have the highest score on a single test date on the SAT and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students of their class based on grade point average to qualify for STAR nomination. Watkins earned the recognition for academic achievement and his performance by scoring a 1490 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT).
Watkins is the winner for the regional best actor 2015 One Act Play and selected to the 2016 All Star Cast. He’s also the winner of the American Legion State “Americanism” essay contest. He’s a member of GMC Prep’s back-to-back State Champion Literary Team, National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, and is the captain of the soccer team. He’s been accepted to Notre Dame and plans to study Neuroscience and Behavior.
As the STAR Teacher, Amanda Mercer was awarded $100. Watkins and Mercer will both move on to compete at the regional level in Macon on March 21st.
