GMC Prep varsity softball team places 2nd at state tournament
GMC Prep's varsity softball team placed 2nd at the state tournament in Columbus, Georgia
The GMC Prep varsity softball team brought the state runner-up trophy back to Milledgeville after competing last Thursday through Saturday in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) softball state tournament in Columbus, Georgia. This was the fifth consecutive season the team has played for the state championship winning back to back titles in 2014 and 2015.
The tournament started on Thursday, October 27, and in 9 innings GMC came out victorious over Bowdon with a score of 3-2. GMC then moved on to the winners’ bracket and beat Glascock County 8-0. They then advanced to the finals of the championship bracket on Saturday morning, October 29, where they beat Gordon Lee 5-2. The team advanced to the state championship game and faced Gordon Lee again who was able to compete through the losers’ bracket. In the final game, GMC fell short to Gordon Lee with a score of 7-2.
“I would personally like to thank the entire GMC family for all of the support given to the players and coaches this season,” said Allen Simmons, GMC’s Head Softball Coach, “Our girls worked extremely hard since last school year, and they are already looking forward to next season. All of GMC is proud of this team.”
Taylor Scott was one of the team leaders who pitched every game recording 29 strikeouts in 5 games against the best hitters in the state. At the plate, the team was led by Cade Bass who was 9-18 (.500), and Kate McGhee who was 7-17 (.412).
The team has two graduating seniors, Caitlin Vinson and Taylor Curtis, Coach Simmons expects his team to be back in Columbus next season.
