"Get in rhythm" with the new GMC Prep School Director of Bands
James Brewer is Georgia Military College’s (GMC) new Prep School Director of Bands. Brewer is originally from Charlotte, North Carolina. He received a bachelor of science in music education from Elon University in North Carolina. He continued his education at The University of North Carolina at Greensboro where he received a master’s degree in music education. Brewer taught percussion ensemble, concert band, marching band, jazz band and chorus at Walter M. Williams High School in North Carolina for seven years, where he was instrumental in helping the band grow.
“My vision is definitely growth,” said James Brewer, GMC’s Prep School Director of Bands. “I feel like there’s a lot of potential in the band program to really grow and be strong. I also see this band program as one of the programs to look at in the area to be the example for other bands. I want us to be competitive, to have students who are achieving really high goals, and for the students to feel like the band is something they really enjoy and really belong to as a family.”
At the GMC Prep School, Brewer will teach concert and marching band for students in grades 6-12. This year the GMC Prep Marching Band, known as the Bulldog Brigade, will perform a Latin inspired show themed “La Fiesta.” Brewer plans to prepare his students for the football games, parades, some competitions and collaborate with the theatre department for an upcoming spring field trip to New York.
“My big goal is to create independent learners who can read music, enjoy music and be able to perform it,” said Brewer.
James Brewer is married to his wife, Diana, who is from Augusta, Ga. and is an opera singer.
