No. 11 Tyler Hangs On For 47-42 Win Over GMC

MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. – The Georgia Military College football team put together a second-half rally and took the lead twice in the fourth quarter against No. 11 Tyler Junior College.

But Tyler was able to answer one more time with 4:48 to go in the game to pull out a 47-42 win over GMC on Saturday afternoon at Davenport Field in a contest that featured five lead changes, including four in the final quarter.

Chaston Bennett got it done for Tyler (6-1) with an 11-yard run to give the Apaches the five-point advantage after the two-point pass failed.

GMC got the ball back one more and marched inside the Tyler 20, but Tre Rosser came up with an interception at the 1-yardline with 1:08 remaining to seal the victory for the Apaches.

GMC (3-4) had rallied from a 31-14 deficit early in the third quarter and eventually took a 35-34 lead with 10:23 left in the game on a Tyler Herman-to-Quez Nesbitt (Lawrenceville, Ga. / Greer, S.C.) 88-yard touchdown pass.

Tyler came right back and was able to regain the lead at 41-35 less than three minutes later when Tevon Muse hit Ryan Parker on an 11-yard TD pass.

But GMC wasn’t finished and took the lead again with 7:04 remaining with Herman hit Dominique Taylor Columbia, S.C.) on a 50-yard catch-and-run for a TD to put the Bulldogs back ahead at 42-41.

“It was hard fought and back and forth,” said GMC head coach Bert Williams. “It came down to who would make the fewest mistakes in the critical moments. I don’t think there were a lot of mistakes, necessarily, but I think we made a couple of more than (Tyler) did and it got us in the end.”

GMC had gone up 7-0 less than two minutes into the game when Taylor caught a 38-yard scoring pass from Herman.

But Tyler came back to tie it at 7-7 when Fua Sapoi hauled in a 9-yard pass from Sederian Copeland with 8:52 remaining in the opening quarter.

Tyler went ahead 14-7 late in the quarter when Parker caught his first of two TD passes on a 19-yard strike from Copeland.

But GMC came right back to knot it at 14-14 when Julian Williams (Suwanee, Ga.) scored on a 26-yard run with 13:39 left in the second quarter.

Tyler would score the next 17 points, including a 5-yard TD run from Bennett and a 27-yard field goal from Ljundrim Kaba to close out the first half and send the Apaches to the locker rooms with a 24-14 lead.

After Bennett caught a 28-yard TD pass from Muse with 10:59 to open the second half that gave Tyler a 31-14 lead, GMC began its comeback.

Herman threw TD passes to Williams for 20 yards, Dieonte Bryant (McDonough, Ga.) for 18 yards and the 88-yarder to Nesbitt that eventually put GMC up 35-34 and set up the exciting finish in the final 10 minutes.

Herman finished with five TD passes, including three to Taylor.

“I thought we did some good things and ran the ball well at times,” said Williams. “We did a pretty good job protection-wise.  We had some new guys on the field and they played well.  I think we’re working hard and getting after it every day.  The guys laid their hearts out there today and played hard.”

Bennett ended up with three TD runs and Parker had two scores to lead the way for Tyler.
