Middle School Honors Night

Georgia Military College recently recognized its middle school students for academic, JROTC, and community achievement, and honored them with a special ceremony. Below is a list of awards and scholarships, which were presented during Honors Night on May 16, 2013. The President’s Volunteer Service Award The President’s Volunteer Service Award was established in 2003 by the President of the United States to recognize the valuable contributions by volunteers. This award is based on the number of hours of service over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime. The following students were invited to a banquet in March at Georgia College & State University where they were recognized for their hours of service. Evan Galloway Colum Lowery Cristian Tolentino Charles Ubah Trevor Yeager The Nancy Kennedy Reading Achievement Award Named in honor of long time GMC English teacher, Nancy Kennedy, this award is presented to the cadet in each grade who accumulates the highest total of AR points for their grade. This year’s recipients are: 6th Grade – Lyssa Blair 7th Grade – Mark Bell 8th Grade – David Sheppard Union Recorder Black History Essay Contest In honor of Black History month, GMC students wrote an essay about African American leaders and competed with students from other schools in the county. The following students received recognition for their essays: 6th Grade Winner: Daniel Gebel 6th Grade Honorable Mention: Dylan Smith 7th Grade Winner: Kate McGhee 7th Grade Honorable Mention: Cory Bivins 8th Grade Winner: Megan Leben 8th Grade Honorable Mention: Zach Spiler American Legion Americanism Essay Contest Each year The National American Legion Auxiliary assigns a title for the essay. This year’s title was “What Freedom Do I Enjoy The Most?” The first place winners will compete with the winners from across Georgia. The Georgia winners will then compete for the National title. Students were presented certificates at a previous ceremony so we will ask them to please stand to be recognized. Colum Lowery – 2nd Place -7th Grade Megan Leben – 1st Place - 8th Grade Geography Bee Each year National Geographic sponsors a school level geography bee for middle school students. The winner for this year was 8th grader Megan Leben and second place went to 8th Grader, Alexander Hanberry. Middle School Math Competition GMC middle school students participated in the Georgia Southern University Math Tournament. The math tournament consisted of an individual math test and group ciphering.
