Columbus Announces Georgia Power Scholarship Recipient

Georgia Military College Columbus Announces Georgia Power Scholarship Recipient for 2011-2012 Columbus, GA – Georgia Military College Columbus is proud to announce that Jacqueline West of Columbus has received the 2011-2012 Georgia Power Scholarship. The Georgia Power Scholarship is offered once a year to a student attending Georgia Military College Columbus. The scholarship is for a non-traditional student, and it can be applied toward any semester except summer during the school year. West participated in an application process which required students to provide letters of recommendation from civic or community leaders. Students also had to write about their reasons for attending college. West described her goals, saying, “With my History major I plan to work with the History Channel and travel to ancient historic sites to research and collect ancient artifacts.” The recipient of the scholarship was chosen based on a number of factors including grade point average, community service involvement, reference letters, involvement within the school, and financial need, according to Jamie Bankston, student services representative at Georgia Military College. West feels “thankful and excited” to continue pursuing her goals at GMC Columbus. Georgia Military College, the only public liberal arts junior college located in Columbus, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees. Washington Monthly recently ranked Georgia Military College as the best 2-year college in Georgia/Alabama, and 12th best in the nation. Some of the majors offered are business administration, criminal justice, education, homeland security, pre-nursing, and psychology. Enrollment for the Winter 2011 term is currently underway.
