Columbus Campus Named a Military Friendly School

Georgia Military CollegeColumbus Campus Named a Military Friendly School G.I. Jobs, a magazine for military personnel transitioning into civilian life, has awarded Georgia Military College Columbus the designation of Military Friendly School again for 2012. The 2012 Military Friendly Schools list honors the top 20 percent of colleges, universities and trade schools that are doing the most to embrace America’s military service members and veterans as students. The 1,518 colleges, universities and trade schools on this list prioritize the recruitment of students with military experience. The list was compiled through extensive research and a data-driven survey of more than 8,000 schools nationwide. Michael Dakduk, Executive Director for the Student Veterans of America, says, “The Military Friendly Schools list is the go-to resource for prospective student veterans searching for schools that provide the right overall experience. Nothing is more compelling than actual feedback from current student veterans.” The Georgia Military College Columbus Campus was chosen as a Military Friendly School for its academic accreditation and efforts to recruit and retain active-duty military, military family members and veteran students. Some Georgia Military College Columbus Campus military friendly policies are waiving all student fees including the application and book fees. The College also offers online classes for more flexibility in scheduling, and the College has an admissions assistant stationed on Ft. Benning to assist active duty military and their family members with the enrollment process, answer questions regarding Georgia Military College, Tuition Assistance (TA), and to assist soldiers in navigating and registering on the GoArmyEd web site. Phenix City resident Chantecia Jackson, army reserve, says that a military-based college was more convenient for her. “I thought Georgia Military College would be a good start,” Jackson says. “As a military student, I don’t know if other schools help as much, but when I need help here, there is someone I can go to that is guaranteed to help with military issues.” Georgia Military College, the only public liberal arts junior college located in Columbus, is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award associate degrees. Washington Monthly recently ranked Georgia Military College as the best 2-year college in Georgia/Alabama, and 12th best in the nation. Some of the majors offered are business administration, criminal justice, education, homeland security, pre-nursing, and psychology. Enrollment for the 2011 term is currently underway.
