Memorial Day Ceremony

Georgia Military College honored those brave individuals who have served our country with a special ceremony on Friday, May 22 at 2:30 p.m. in the Goldstein Center for Performing Arts. The guest speaker was LTC Jay Hallam, GMC Military Science Professor. MAJ Harriett Nelson received a saber in recognition of her retirement from GMC and to honor her years of service to the school. The Distinguished Graduating Student Award was presented to the following: Lisa McCollum (Milledgeville), Nikacie Carmichael (Atlanta-Fairburn), Dustin Hayden (Augusta-Martinez), Tujuana Lewis (Columbus), Ammie Nicole Leonard (Valdosta) and Barbara Shaheen (Warner Robins). This award recognizes a graduating student from each campus who is the best representative of the college and embodies all the qualities a graduate of Georgia Military College should possess. Mrs. June Underwood was named the GMC Faculty Member of the Year for representing the values, ideals, and caring nature essential to successfully teaching the youth of our college during the school year. During the parade special recognition was given all nominees for GMC Employee of the Year: Debra Bunn - Atlanta-Fairburn; Tracie Price - Columbus; Mary Jo Sheppard - Sandersville; Chad Daugherty - Valdosta; Paul McCord - Warner Robins; Doug Miller (MSD), Sally Thrower (Advancement), Larry Gill (Engineering), Ed Shelor (JC-Faculty), and Delores Somers (Commandant) – Milledgeville. Mrs. Marilu Couch was named the 2008-2009 GMC Employee of the Year for contributing most to the accomplishment of the GMC mission during the school year. The Saber Award was presented to the following Company Commanders and First Sergeants of the Saber Companies: c/COL Pancho Gonzales Regimental Commander 130th Corps Of Cadets SY 2008-2009 c/CPT Vince Camacho Commander, Company B, 4th Battalion Saber Company 130th Corps Of Cadets SY 2008-2009 1SG Charles Kelly c/CPT Lauren Harbor Commander, Band Company, 2d Battalion Saber Company 130th Corps Of Cadets SY 2008-2009 1SG Percy Cannon c/CPT Elliot Fairbrass Commander, Company F, 3rd Battalion Saber Company 130th Corps Of Cadets SY 2008-2009 1SG Nathan Weldon The Order of the Centurion was presented to Cadet Samuel Lummus. This award is presented to a cadet who has demonstrated excellence in scholastics, athletics and leadership, and has earned the exalted distinction of Warrior Leader. Cadet Charles Kelly was promoted to c/COL and appointed as the Regimental Commander for the 131st Corps of Cadets. ###
