MAJ Amy Lee, 2008-2009 Prep School Teacher of the Year

MAJ Amy Lee – 2008-2009 Prep School Teacher of the Year MAJ Amy Lee, English Language Arts Teacher for GMC Prep School was recognized as the GMC Prep School Teacher of the Year during the 2009 Grand Tattoo and Command Retreat. This award is presented annually to a prep school faculty member for representing the values, ideals, and caring nature essential to successfully teaching the youth of our prep school. Major Lee was presented with The President’s Award for Excellence medallion, a check for $500, and an engraved watch presented by the GMC Foundation. MAJ Amy Lee is the current 9th and 10th grade English language Arts teacher for the prep school. After earning her MAT (Master of Arts in Teaching) from Georgia College and State University in 2003, she began teaching full time for GMC. In the classroom, Amy believes that students should be up moving and talking to encourage learning—learning from not only the teacher but also from one another. She believes students will learn more if they are interested and encouraged and if they can relate the material to their own lives. Students are given a wide array of assessments ranging from fairy tale books to proposal presentations to research papers. Community service is also integrated into her subject area whenever possible (i.e. this year students wrote letters to troops overseas and decorated pillowcases for them). In addition to her classroom efforts, she stays busy with coaching the varsity basketball cheerleaders and literary team. She also coaches students involved in speaking engagements, works with the students to plan prom, participates on various prep school and institutional committees, and, next year, will be teaching Advanced Placement Language and Composition to juniors. In honor of all her efforts, she was also awarded a Community Service Award from the institution. For all MAJ Lee does for the students, faculty, and staff, she was selected as the 2008-2009 Prep School Teacher of the Year.
