Alcohol and Other Drug (AOD) Services

AOD incorporates R.A.I.S.E (Reducing Alcohol Incidents through Student Education) which is a social norms campaign funded by the PLCB. R.A.I.S.E. looks to foster a healthy social and residential campus through education and programs. R.A.I.S.E. seeks to correct misperceptions of social norms relating to alcohol use on college campuses specifically Gwynedd's community.

Mission

Gwynedd-Mercy College’s AOD/R.A.I.S.E. Services are based on a model of care that focuses on prevention, early intervention, education, and treatment. The Services offer a holistic approach to health and well-being that is grounded in models of student development as well as current research with evidence-based health and mental health interventions.  The AOD/R.A.I.S.E. Services are offered within Counseling Services, are comprehensive, and are congruent with professional standards for behavioral health.

Services

The AOD/R.A.I.S.E. Counselor provides a range of services for the Gwynedd-Mercy College community that includes:  social norming information, consultation, outreach, assessment, education and counseling.  The services provided are conducted on a voluntary basis or may be required as part of the judicial process.  All services are provided at no cost to Gwynedd-Mercy College students.  Students may incur a cost if evaluations and/or treatment are required to be received by a community based provider.

Referral

A student may contact the AOD/R.A.I.S.E. Counselor to schedule an appointment or may be sanctioned to schedule an appointment through the judicial process as a result of a violation, either on or off campus, of the College’s Alcohol and Other Drug Policy. This policy can be found within the Student Code of Conduct.  Each student receives an assessment in the form of an interview and completion of an on-line self assessment such as e-CHUG or e-TOKE.  An assessment provides an initial benchmark for determining level of alcohol or drug related risk.  The Counselor will review the findings and discuss with the student the recommendations for indicated needs.

Any student required to meet with the AOD/R.A.I.S.E. Counselor must complete, at a minimum, the BASICS course comprised of 3 sessions; 1) Assessment 2) Feedback 3) Motivational Interviewing. Group classes may be offered, when appropriate, that uses condensed version of BASICS.  The length and number of sessions is determined by the AOD/R.A.I.S.E. Counselor.   Once a student has successfully completed BASICS and any other recommendations made during review of assessment findings, a letter of completion is provided.  It is the student’s responsibility to ensure the judicial officer receives a copy of the letter of completion.

Levels of service

Appropriate level of service is determined during the assessment phase which all students are expected to complete in both Levels 1 and 2.  The decision regarding which level of service needed is based upon 1) criteria of scores from assessment tools and 2) the clinical decision made by the AOD/R.A.I.S.E. Counselor concerning the best interest of the student.

Level 1

Level 1 is an assessment and educational process completed by all students requesting or requiring AOD services.  Within this Level, a student will complete a 3 BASICS sessions in addition to completing assigned homework. The 3 sessions will be as follows: 1) Assessment 2) Feedback and 3) Motivational Interviewing to change any concerning behaviors.

Level 2

Level 2 is designed to address the needs of a student beyond assessment and education done in Level 1.  At this level, a student’s substance use is further evaluated and may indicate a need for additional services past the scope of the AOD/R.A.I.S.E. Services.  The AOD/R.A.I.S.E. Counselor will then refer to a community based provider for assessment and treatment. The community provider will consult the Counselor on recommendations and follow-up done by the student.
