If you are embarking on a job search, chances are you have spent some time perfecting your resume and cover letter and practicing some basic interview questions. That’s great, but you can take your preparation one step farther by doing some informational interviews to get the job you want or figure out your best career fit.
Informational interviewing is just like it sounds. You are contacting companies or people in the field you are interested in and “interviewing” them about what they do. It is a great way to talk to professionals in the field and really get a feel for their day-to-day responsibilities on the job. That way, you can decide if you can see yourself doing a similar job in the future.
Most people are excited to help new graduates or students decide on a career path. However, make it clear to the professional that you aren’t asking for a job. Rather, you are gathering all the information you can about what they do and what the job entails. Any tips or information they can provide for you will be a great tool as you figure out what your career path is.
Just by reaching out to someone, you are expanding your professional network and working on becoming a member of the workplace. Don’t forget to stay in touch with the person you contact. They can become a valuable member of your network and can be a great resource to use when you start applying for positions.
