Milennium development goals:
8 Simple Ways to Save the World!

What would it take to make the world a better place?

In the year 2000, at the turn of the millennium, the 189 member countries of the United Nations established eight "Millennium Development Goals" (MDG's) designed to eradicate extreme poverty by 2015.  The goals are specific, measurable, and desperately needed. They include:

1.      Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2.      Achieve universal primary education
3.      Promote gender equality and empower women
4.      Reduce child mortality
5.      Improve maternal health
6.      Combat HIV/AIDS and other diseases
7.      Ensure environmental sustainability
8.      Develop a global partnership for development

To learn more about the MDG's and to track each country's progress, visit www.endpoverty2015.org.

In May of 2009, GMC students Chase Hall, Steven Rufe, Lauren Stachelek and Tara White, along with Director of Campus Ministry Christine Eberle, attended a conference at the United Nations, sponsored by the Conference of Mercy Higher Education.  Mercy Meets the U.N. brought together students, faculty and staff from eight Mercy colleges and universities.  Another "Mercy Meets the U.N." conference is scheduled for May 23-25, 2011.

Inspired by Mercy Meets the U.N., Tara White (Class of 2010), then a student leader in Campus Ministry/Mercy Works, kept a blog of small, do-able changes we can all make to show our solidarity with these Millennium Development Goals and with our one human family around the world. You can visit Tara's blog here!
