Veteran News Anchor Ukee Washington Visits Campus

CBS 3's esteemed morning anchor and "Talk Philly" co-host Ukee Washington was on hand to speak with communications students on Oct. 18. He talked about his life growing up, what attracted him to the industry and what it takes to break into it. After answering questions, he checked out the brand new studio in the Waldron Center.

Washington grew up in West Philadelphia and graduated from the University of Richmond. After television stints in Florida and Atlanta, he returned to Philadelphia in 1986. While working at CBS, Washington has covered a variety of high-profile events including the President’s Summit for America’s Future in 1997 and the Phillies World Series celebration parade in 2008. Along with current duties as morning anchor and talk show host, Washington dabbles in the world of film. His popular "Keepin' it Reel" segments feature movie reviews and interviews with prominent Hollywood "A-listers". Washington has seen the evolution of the industry in his years of experience.

 

Attack of the Jacks Returns for Halloween

On Sunday Oct. 29*, the community is invited to walk through an exhibit of 300 originally carved jack-o-lanterns. Dubbed “Attack of the Jacks”, Gwynedd-Mercy College’s Student Government Association is hosting the event from 7pm-9pm at the Genuardi Pavilion (#10).

Students, faculty and staff will prepare the glowing jack-o-lanterns for the evening. Admission is free and light refreshments will be provided. If there is inclement weather, the rain date will be during the same time on Oct. 30.

*The event has been officially rescheduled for Sunday Oct. 30.

Seminar for Children with Learning Disabilities Comes to Campus

Esteemed special needs advocate Rick Lavoie brings his expertise to Gwynedd-Mercy College for an informative seminar on October 29th. "It's So Hard to be Your Friend: Helping the Child with Learning Disabilities Find Success" will run from 9AM-3PM and provide guidance to parents, teachers, coaches and caregivers. The event will explore the relationship between learning disabilities and social incompetence and will identify the specific causes for particular social skills deficits. Field tested strategies will be presented that can be used to assist students in gaining peer acceptance and developing age-appropriate social skills.

Lavoie holds three degrees in Special Education and has served as adjunct professor or visiting lecturer at numerous universities including Harvard, Syracuse, University of Alabama and Georgetown. He has made appearances on ABC Nightly News, Good Morning America and The Early Show.

Sports Journalist and Author Toby Smith to Work With Communications Students

In conjunction with the Council of Independent Colleges and Woodrow Wilson Visiting Fellows Program, Gwynedd-Mercy College’s School of Arts and Sciences and School of Business present sports journalist Toby Smith. The nine-time author, who has written for Sports Illustrated, ESPN The Magazine, The New York Times and the Wall Street Journal, will visit campus from Oct. 3 – Oct. 6.

Smith will speak to several journalism-related classes about what it takes to be successful in the industry, as well as work with students on their writing skills. At 7:15pm on Oct. 3, he will hold an open presentation to students and the general public at the Connelly Faculty Center’s tier classroom.

Smith is gearing up for the release of his latest piece of nonfiction writing about legendary African-American prizefighter Jack Johnson. He was twice named a Fulbright scholar where he traveled to Romania to teach a sports writing course. Smith has also taught at Ohio State University, Wesleyan University and the University of New Mexico.
