2011 Nursing Excellence Awards Nominate an outstanding nurse in Bucks or Montgomery County to receive the Nursing Excellence Award! Recipients will be honored with an award and monetary gift at a reception in May at the College, just before Nurses Week. Nurses working at all settings and at all levels are eligible for nomination. The nominee must have worked as a nurse full time or part time for at least the past two years. Deadline: March 11, 2011
The History of Hip-Hop: A Journey Through Spoken Word
Wednesday, Feb. 16 1:30 - 2:30 p.m. Julia Ball Auditorium Admission: Free Gregory "Just Greg" Corbin, poet and motivational speaker, will use the art of spoken word to illustrate the evolution of the hip-hop genre from its deep African roots to its current mainstream appeal. Black History Month Celebration: Charlotte Blake Alston
Friday, Feb. 11 at 8 p.m. Julia Ball Auditorium Admission: Free Each year, Gwynedd-Mercy College holds a cultural event for the community, commemorating Black History Month and the people, events and history of the African diaspora that it recognizes.
Celebrate this year's Black History Month by taking a musical walk through history. The community is invited to a cultural performance by Charlotte Blake Alston, a storyteller, instrumentalist and singer who will narrate traditional and contemporary African and African American stories. Alston will use traditional instruments to accompany her narrative journey, including the djembe, mbira, shakere and the 21-stringed kora (pictured right). Parking is available in Lots A, C and D. Laughs for Lives Comedy Show Waldron Board Room, Waldron Center Thursday, Feb. 3 at 8 p.m. $3 donation at door
Opening act Ryan Hill, who hails from Allentown, Pa., has been in the comedy scene for several years. Headliner David James, of Philadelphia, won best comedian at Helium Comedy Club in 2009 and works comedy clubs from Atlantic City to Las Vegas. The show, sponsored by the Student Government Association, benefits Crusade for Care (www.crusadeforcare.com), which supports patient care at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
