Community Day

*This event was originally scheduled for April 16, but due to inclement weather, has been postponed until April 30.

Variety – The Children’s Charity of Greater Philadelphia and Gwynedd-Mercy College human services majors partner together to present Community Day on Saturday, April 30.

Community Day will be filled with activities, games and food, including face painting, carnival games, live entertainment by local duo Alex and Amy, and visits from the Phillies Harmony Club, Elmwood Park Zoo, and Worcester Volunteer Fire Department. Fingerprinting for children will also be available to provide parents with fingerprint cards for their records.

Community Day will be held from noon to 5 p.m., followed by a spaghetti dinner sponsored by Scoogi’s Classic Italian Restaurant, in Flourtown, Pa., from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. All activities will take place at Variety Club Camp & Developmental Center on Potshop Rd. in Worcester, Pa.

Admission is $7 per car, which includes $2 in tickets for activities. The spaghetti dinner is an additional $7 for adults and $3.50 for children under 12.

Gwynedd-Mercy College human services majors partnered with Variety Philadelphia for this event to increase community involvement and to raise funds for the not-for-profit’s numerous programs that benefit children with developmental and physical disabilities. Spring Musicale: Hear America Singing

Celebrate patriotism through song with Gwynedd-Mercy College’s choir, the Voices of Gwynedd, as it presents Hear America Singing. The choir will perform song selections from all over the country, including “Georgia on My Mind,” “New York State of Mind,” and a medley including “Philadelphia Freedom” and “Allentown.” The performance will end with “When the Saints Go Marching In” to acknowledge the choir’s upcoming tour in New Orleans. While there, the Voices of Gwynedd will sing at St. Louis Cathedral and on the Steamboat Natchez and will also participate in a service project in the Ninth Ward.

Hear America Singing will take place in the Julia Ball Auditorium, located in St. Bernard Hall. Parking is available in lots A, C and D. For more information, please call 215-641-5599.

 

 

Walk or Run a 5K for Exceptional Persons!

Register for the Exceptional Persons 5k Walk/Run, which will be held on Gwynedd-Mercy College’s campus on Sunday, April 10 at 1 p.m. The event will benefit the Special Education Club and the School of Education’s Autism Institute.

The minimum donation to register is $20, which includes a T-shirt. Those interested may pre-register here. A registration table will be located outside St. Bernard Hall and the starting line will be adjacent to Gustav Martin Hall. The event is rain or shine. Parking is available in lots C and D on campus. The Special Education Club is also seeking sponsors for the event. Those interested in becoming a sponsor may e-mail Steven Rufe at rufe.s@gmc.edu.

 

 

Shakespeare at the Opera

A Celebration of the 15th anniversary of the Honors Program

Opera North, Inc., Pennsylvania’s only African-American opera company, will present Shakespeare at the Opera at Gwynedd-Mercy College. The performance is part of the College’s celebration of the 15th anniversary of its Honors Program.

Shakespeare at the Opera a multi-media presentation features projected images and song selections from operas and plays based on many of Shakespeare’s famous works. The seven artists who will perform are Perry Brisbon, tenor, Allen Boxer, bass-baritone, Iris Fairfax, coloratura soprano, Curtis Gregory, narrator, Shango-Jamal Lewis, bass-baritone, Pasquale Montenegro, pianist, and Allison Sanders, mezzo-soprano.

Barrymore award-winning playwright Jules Tasca, a longtime faculty member at Gwynedd-Mercy College, created the narration for Opera North, Inc.’s Shakespeare at the Opera.  Projected images were

PennSuburban Chamber Business Fair 2011

On Thursday, April 7, the PennSuburban Chamber of Commerce will host its annual Business Fair at Gwynedd-Mercy College. This year's theme is "Featuring a Taste of North Penn."

The fair is held in The Griffin Complex gymnasium from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.

Check up on Wellness at GMC’s Wellness Fair

 

Everyone is welcome to the free Wellness Fair on Wednesday, April 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. More than 20 vendors will be available. Come by to receive on-site massages, make-up and beauty advice, eye screenings, and more. There will also be free giveaways and soft pretzels.

The event is sponsored by the college’s Wellness Committee. It will be held in the Julia Ball Auditorium lobby, located in St. Bernard Hall. Parking is available in lots A, C and D. For more information, please call 215-646-7300, ext. 306.
