Information for Prospective Graduate Students

Gwynedd-Mercy offers a range of graduate programs designed for busy working professionals who are seeking to move their careers to the next level or change their career path altogether.

With a close-knit graduate community, experienced faculty and admissions staff, we provide all of our students:

  • A personal touch: Throughout each step of the application process (and your journey as a student) you will receive the information you need in a timely, efficient manner delivered in a format that works for you.
  • A caring environment: The staff and faculty will know you. They will take the time to understand what your explicit goals are and help you achieve those goals.
  • Energized class-time: Our instructors understand that you’ve been at work all day. They won’t lecture at you. Instead the classroom is energized by group work, discussions and projects, all designed to keep you motivated and engaged in class.

Applying to the School of Education

For those pursuing a master’s degree in education, GMC offers four unique degree options designed with your unique goals in mind. These graduate programs allow for flexibility for the working student. Find out more about GMC’s Graduate Education programs.

SEE INFORMATION ON APPLYING TO THE SCHOOL OF EDUCATION

The following materials are required in order for you to be considered for acceptance into a graduate education program:

  1. A completed graduate application.
  2. Two professional references. DOWNLOAD — Reference Form
  3. A typed (double-spaced), one page Personal Statement of your professional and academic goals.
  4. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended.
    • Applicants for Elementary and Secondary Education certification must have completed at least 6 semester credits in college level mathematics and at least 6 credits in college level English composition and literature.
    • Applicants without previous teaching experience may be required to complete undergraduate coursework as a requirement for certification.
  5. A copy of your valid instructional certificate. If you do not hold a valid instructional certificate, you must take and pass the three Praxis I exams.
    • Information regarding the Praxis I exam can be obtained by contacting the Educational Testing Service at 1-800-772-9476 or online at www.ets.org/praxis.
  6. An appointment for an interview with a graduate education faculty member will be arranged when your file is complete.

Applying to the Frances M. Maguire School of Nursing

The Master of Science in Nursing program prepares professional nurses for advanced practice as a Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) (with a concentration in adulth health with gerontology), Nurse Practitioner (NP) (with specializations in adult health with gerontology or pediatric health), or Certified Nurse Educator (CNE) (which serves as a basis for doctoral study). A 25-credit Post-MSN certification program to become a Nurse Practitioner (with specializations in adult health with gerontology and pediatric health) is also available. Click here to learn more.

The following materials are required in order for you to be considered for acceptance into a graduate education program:

  1. A completed graduate application.
  2. Two references from professional nurses. DOWNLOAD — Reference Form
  3. A personal statement of your advanced practice nursing goals. Please answer the following questions in paragraph form:
    • Describe your perception of the roles of an Advanced Practice Nurse.
    • What goals do you aim to achieve after you become an Advanced Practice Nurse?
    • How does your previous experience relate to your current goals within your proposed specialization?
    • Discuss the following statement: Graduate nursing education must prepare nurses who can assume leadership roles in advancing professional practice, research, education and health care policy.
  4. Official transcripts from all colleges/universities attended.
    • A basic undergraduate statistics course equivalent to 3 semester hours is required.
    • A physical assessment course equivalent to 2 semester hours is required.
  5. Results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT). This requirement is waived for applicants who earned a cumulative average of 3.6 or better in their undergraduate nursing program.
    • Information regarding the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) can be obtained by contacting the Educational Testing Service at 1-866-473-4372 or online at www.ets.org/gre.
    • Information regarding the Miller Analogies Test (MAT) can be obtained by calling 1-800-622-3231 or online at www.milleranalogies.com.
  6. A copy of your valid RN license and current professional liability insurance.
  7. An appointment for an interview with a graduate nursing faculty member will be arranged when your file is complete.

For Non-Matriculated Students

Non-Matriculated students may take as many as 6 credits of course work on a part-time basis at Gwynedd-Mercy College. After completing these 6 credits, students must contact the Office of Graduate Admissions for advice about matriculation, that is, to work toward one of the degrees offered at the college.
