Four Seasons of Student Financial Aid
SPRING in the junior year of high school
Research colleges and yourself. See what they and you have to offer. What combination would be a good fit for you. Check out catalogs and websites. Visit campuses. Remember, environment is important.
Find out whether you would be eligible for Merit Scholarships, i.e. - academic achievement, extra curricular contributions, community service, etc. Be realistic as to where you fit into the competition at the various colleges.
Talk to current college students. A "satisfied customer" is an important reference. Choosing a college is a time-consuming project; do not let it go to the last minute.
FALL in the senior year of high school
Narrow the list of colleges to which you want to formally apply. Three or four schools should suffice unless you have special concerns. Talk it over with a guidance counselor and family.
Be careful to find out what forms are required for both Admissions and Financial Aid and the deadlines to be met. The college catalog, website or a call directly to the college is always a good bet. While there is similarity in requirements, the differences can be significant. Failure to meet deadlines can affect your admissions and/or financial aid.
Check out scholarships from outside sources., i.e. - parent's employer, religious or ethnic groups, veterans or trade organizations, etc. High school guidance offices and local libraries are good places to search.
By December the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) will become available. Check with your guidance office. The FAFSA cannot be filed until after January 1.
WINTER in the senior year of high school
File FAFSA as soon as possible after January 1st. Use actual figures if possible, but if necessary use estimated figures in order to meet specific college deadlines.
If you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from meeting the deadline, call the college's financial aid office before you file to get advice on how to proceed.
Again, remember to check deadlines, state and outside scholarship programs.
SPRING in the senior year of high school
You should be hearing back from colleges regarding your admission and aid eligibility. Compare offers and call colleges for clarification if needed.
Many times revisiting the colleges as an accepted student is very helpful in making the final decision.
Pay the deposit when required and don't forget to notify the other colleges that you are not attending.
Remember, the choice of a college is one of the most significant choices you will probably make in your life.
