GMC: Limitless Opportunities

When I first came to Gwynedd-Mercy College a year ago, I never would have expected that I would have already experienced so much  The opportunities to succeed have been endless. Currently, I am in my second year at GMC, a sophomore in the Elementary/Special/Early Childhood Education program. I live on campus and enjoy meeting new people and joining every club and organization that fits my crazy schedule.

If you would have sat me down a year ago today and asked me if I thought I would have an internship with the Partnership for Global Justice (www.partnershipforglobaljustice.com) in New York City (which is a Non-Government Organization that works with the United Nations) I would have thought you were insane. But, when you put your mind to it, it’s possible. The experience all started when I traveled to the United Nations, courtesy of Gwynedd, to attend a Mercy Meets the UN Conference. I didn’t know what to expect, but found out that there is a larger world outside of Gwynedd Valley, Pa.

Now, I travel weekly to the United Nations. Every Wednesday, I get in my car and drive to Trenton, NJ, on just one part of my two and a half hour long commute. Some have called me crazy, especially considering all the other things I’ve joined this year, but I could not pass up the opportunity. Traveling to the UN weekly broadens my horizon and helps me to learn more about the world around me. I could never take in everything there is to offer at the UN, but I can bring back everything I learn. I encourage you to dream big. Take things one step at a time and realize that your dreams are possible. I know mine are coming true, and it all started with a three day conference that Gwynedd sent me to!

Here is the latest update I have on the UN: On Wednesday, February 5, 2010, I sat in on the "48th Session Commission For Social Development."  The Commission, which was at the United Nations and had extremely strict security, is currently chaired by the country of Ghana. The Commission seeks to promote social inclusion by encouraging the participation of women, addressing poverty concerns, ensuring each child has the right to an education, enabling every person to have an adequate job, and also to advocate for the disabled. At the Commission I heard diplomats from many countries, including the United States, address successes and failures of each individual country. The day was a very long one, but I learned so much about social development and the successes and failures of many countries.

If you would like more information about me, what I do, or Gwynedd-Mercy College from the eyes of a student, please feel free to contact me at Rufe.S@gmc.edu!
