The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a growing need for respiratory therapists in the coming years – a direct result of the aging population, the increase in asthma and tremendous rise in chronic disease. Respiratory therapists evaluate and treat patients with cardiopulmonary disorders and are actively involved in health promotion and disease prevention. They care for all types of patients, from the premature infant to the extremely old, and practice in a variety of settings, ranging from patients’ homes to the highest level of critical care units. Students in the respiratory therapy major will learn diagnostic procedures ranging from physical examination to the use of highly sophisticated computerized equipment. Patient treatment skills will include everything from the administration of inhaled medications to maintaining critically ill patients on ventilators.
In just three years at Gwynedd Mercy University, students in the Associates Degree in Respiratory Care Program can be qualified for employment in this expanding field and be eligible to sit for their Entry-Level and Advanced-Level Credentialing Examinations. Students learn how to diagnose and treat patients with respiratory abnormalities, such as pneumonia, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Additionally, graduates can work in the areas of neonatal (newborns), pediatrics (children), critical care, and home care.
For those pursuing advanced careers, professional leadership roles, or teaching opportunities, an additional year of education provides the desired experience and a Bachelor Degree in Respiratory Therapy.
