In 2009-2010, the college community will be reading The Soloist by Steve Lopez. Hailed as
"an inspiring story of heartbreak and hope" by Publishers Weekly, this book follows the development of the friendship between Lopez, a columnist for the Los Angeles Times, and Nathanial Ayers, a gifted musician and paranoid schizophrenic. The book was chosen, in part, because of its thoughtful treatment of the core values of Gwynedd-Mercy College including:
- Compassion
- Dignity of Each Person
- Service
- Social Responsibility
All first-year students in FYE are required to read The Soloist as part of their curriculum. Complimentary copies of the book are available from advisors. Students should read The Soloist over the summer and be prepared to discuss it in FYE 1000 in the fall.
If you didn't recieve your copy of the book, please contact Rebecca Signore at 215-646-7300 ext. 243 or signore.r@gmc.edu.
Happy Reading!
