Special and Elementary Education The school of Education offers a dual undergraduate degree along with Pennsylvania State teaching certification in Elementary Education, Special Education and Early Childhood Education. A unique feature of the undergraduate program allows a student to obtain a Bachelor of Science degree along with all three teaching certifications within their four year undergraduate program. This opportunity positions our graduates to be highly marketable candidates for a variety of teaching positions in public and private schools in Pennsylvania. As of 2006-07, students who enter the Bachelor of Science in Special and Elementary Education will earn teacher certification in elementary education, early childhood education and special education. This specialized program, with emphasis in teaching technology, literacy and reading, language and writing, as well as math and classroom management, is designed to prepare teachers to be ready to teach in the schools of the future. Special and Elementary Education Curriculum information Teacher Apprentice Program (TAP) The School of Education offers unique opportunities to future teachers by providing classroom field experiences during each semester. The Teacher Apprentice Program (TAP) places students in the classroom every Wednesday for six semesters starting their first semester freshman year and continuing through their second semester junior year. Gwynedd Mercy College is fortunate enough to have several on-campus programs that meet TAP’s requirements, so that first year students do not have to leave campus if they do not drive. For instance, the Valie Genuardi Hobbit House, an on-campus nursery school, provides students interested in becoming certified in early childhood with the opportunity to work with young children in an exemplary teaching and learning environment.
