Master of Sciences in Reading

There are more than 25 million illiterate adults in the United States today. Gwynedd-Mercy College seeks to address this problem through two strategic goals:

  1. Preventive goal: Improve the instruction of reading at the elementary and secondary levels, thereby increasing the literacy level of those participating in basic education.
  2. Corrective goal: Promote an understanding of the reading process and instructional techniques appropriate for those working to correct reading deficits and remediate reading disabilities in the school-age population as well as for educators seeking to eliminate illiteracy among the adult population.

There are three options available in the Reading program: Master of Science in Reading, Master of Science in Reading with a Reading Specialist Certification, and Reading Specialist Certification. The body of research literature on reading is enormous. This program provides a forum for systematically studying the cutting edge of this literature and discovering its application to practice. The program offers various options in order to accommodate different academic and career goals.

Regular and Fast Track programs are available. Fast Track programs are given at several off-campus locations.

Master of Science - Fast Track with Reading Specialist Certification

Program Overview:
The Fast Track Master in Science in Reading with Certification is composed of 12 courses with each course lasting 7 weeks in duration. The program is currently being held at locations off campus. This program is run in a cohort model which allows the student to go through the program with the same group of students (teachers). The program is designed so that students build good working and learning relationships with each other and learn more in a more productive environment. It has been a very successful model.
