Master of Science in Education:
Secondary Education Certification
(Credits/see description below)

Gwynedd Valley Campus

This course of study is designed for students who have a bachelor’s degree in a field other than education and who are seeking certification in this content area. It requires 27 credits in the certification (3 credits are Student Teaching). Other courses are required in the content area. The number and course names are ascertained through an evaluation of the student’s transcript.

There are two phases in this program:

  1. PA Certification Program – Students complete the certification requirements, successfully take the PRAXIS Series Battery and apply for Instructional I certification (check with your advisor for current rules).

  2. Master’s completion – Students then complete the nine (9) graduate credits needed for 36-credit MS degree.

  • EDU 502 - The Learning & Teaching Process
  • EDU 503 - Social and Political Foundations of Education
  • EDU 504 - Human Development
  • EDU 508 - Secondary School Methods and Materials
  • EDU 565 - Student Teaching and Professional Seminar
  • EDU 580 - Multicultural and Diversity Issues in Education
  • EDU 581 - Students with Special Needs
  • EDU 300 - Pre-Student Teaching
Required content area courses: (determined by review of all transcripts) - Biology, Business/Computer Information Technology, English, Mathematics, Social Studies and field experience. Master's completion (9 credits)
  • EDU 510 - Educational Research
  • EDU 583 - Action Research Seminar
  • EDU 603 - Action Research Thesis

Admission Process

  1. Complete an online application.
  2. Provide two professional references (click here for Reference Report).
  3. Provide a typed, double-spaced, one page Personal Statement of your professional and academic goals.
  4. Provide official transcripts from ALL colleges/universities attended.
  5. Set up an interview with a graduate education faculty member when your application is complete.

Note:
A minimum of 33 graduate credits is required for MS in Education; all courses are three (3) credits. Prior coursework evaluation may reduce the program length.
