What is Autism? Autism is the most severe form of ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorders). ASD is a range of complex development disorders, characterized by social impairments, communication difficulties, and restricted, repetitive, and stereotyped patterns of behavior. Other conditions along the spectrum include Asperger syndrome, childhood disintegrative disorder and pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified (usually referred to as PDD-NOS). How common is Autism? It is estimated that one in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism. In the United States it is estimated that 1 out of 70 boys is diagnosed with autism. This is more common than childhood cancer, juvenile diabetes and pediatric AIDS combined. An estimated 1.5 million individuals in the U.S. are affected by autism. Government statistics indicate that the rate of autism is increasing 10-17 percent annually.
