English

The English program at Gwynedd-Mercy College offers students the opportunity to explore literature and theory in a variety of genres and contexts.  Students hone their critical thinking, critical reading, analytical, writing and speaking skills while taking courses in Medieval, Renaissance, 18th-century, Romantic, Victorian, Modern and Contemporary literatures.  Students in the traditional English major culminate their college experience with a senior seminar as their capstone course.

English with Secondary Education Certification

Students interested in an English degree with a certification in secondary education take 39 credits in the English major and 39 credits in education requirements, including a pre-student and a student teaching practicum.

Internships

Students in the English program may earn course credit and gain valuable practical experience through internships.  Faculty advisors encourage students to find appropriate opportunities that will advance their professional competence in the field of their choice.  Recent student internships have occurred in public relations departments, publishing firms, and non-profit organizations.

Lambda Iota Tau

Gwynedd-Mercy College has a local chapter of the literary honor society, Lambda Iota Tau.  The program faculty members nominate students with high academic achievement, and the annual induction ceremony includes students reading abstracts of their work.  Lambda Iota Tau members receive certificates and pins during the induction, and they are distinguished by the purple and gold cords they wear at the honors convocation and graduation in May of each year.

The Gwynmercian

Students write articles, edit copy, take photographs, and arrange the layout for the College’s newspaper, The Gwynmercian.  Although any student is welcome to contribute to The Gwynmercian as a co-curricular activity, students enrolled in ENG 107, Basic Journalism and ENG 109, Journalism Practicum receive course credit for their work on the paper.

Career Opportunities

A baccalaureate degree in English is a versatile preparation for many careers.  Graduates of our program are employed as attorneys, editors, journalists, public relations directors, communication specialists, sales directors, software specialists, and teachers.  Many alumni pursue graduate degrees in literature and writing theory.
