Lisa Coughlin McGarry, PhD is the dean of the School of Arts and Sciences and an associate professor in English at Gwynedd-Mercy College.  She previously served as chair of the Language, Literature and Fine Arts division, coordinator of the writing program, and director of the Academic Resource Center.  Dr. McGarry teaches courses in introductory and advanced writing, 20th-century British and American literature, the First-Year Experience Program, and the Honors Program. In addition to teaching, she enjoys being a workshop facilitator for the Student Leadership Program. Her service to the College also includes working on various committees, task forces, and self-study workgroups, such as the Educational Review Committee, General Admissions Committee, Middle States Workgroup and Steering Committee, and Strategic Planning Steering Committee.

Dr. McGarry earned her bachelors degree in English literature from Temple University, her master's degree in 20th-century British and American literature from Vilanova University, and her doctorate in British literature from Lehigh University. She is a member of the Modern Language Association, International Virginia Woolf Society, Lambda Iota Tau, and Association of American University Professors, and in 2003, she also became an Associate in Mercy.

In 2008, Dr. McGarry received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching. She is also the author of Orts, Scraps, and Fragments: The Elusive Search for Meaning in Virginia Woolf’s Fiction (2007, University Press of America).
