Communication Major

Exciting things are happening at GMC. Like here. And here.

What our communication program has

that others don’t...

It’s the most comprehensive four-year communication program offered in the Philadelphia area. The curriculum spans all parts of the communications field rather than asking students to specialize in only one field within the discipline. This prepares students for all types of communications careers, in writing, broadcasting, media technology, public relations, and in various industries such as corporate, non-profit, education, media and government.

If students are more interested in one aspect of the communication program, he or she can use electives to take more classes in that subject.

Tough economy? You can beat the odds.

The communication program requires students to complete an internship. At least 70% of college students nationwide do at least one internship. Studies show that students who complete an internship are more likely to land a job. See where this is going? You will be among these students.

What will some of your communication coursework include?

In “Advanced Journalism,” you will become an integral part of the student newspaper, The Gwynmercian, gaining advanced skills in news selection, writing, headline creation, editing and layout.

As the field evolves, it's important to learn how the internet is shaping journalism."GwyneddNow" is the College's brand new student-run blog.

In multiple courses, you will work with leading-edge equipment found in TV, radio and production studios, including:

  • Final Cut Pro software
  • Digital video switchers, camcorders, audio mixers
  • Green screen (chroma key)

Veteran News Anchor Ukee Washington Visits Campus

CBS 3's esteemed morning anchor and "Talk Philly" co-host Ukee Washington was on hand to speak with communications students on Oct. 18. He talked about his life growing up, what attracted him to the industry and what it takes to break into it. After answering questions, he checked out the brand new studio in the Waldron Center.

Washington grew up in West Philadelphia and graduated from the University of Richmond. After television stints in Florida and Atlanta, he returned to Philadelphia in 1986. While working at CBS, Washington has covered a variety of high-profile events including the President’s Summit for America’s Future in 1997 and the Phillies World Series celebration parade in 2008. Along with current duties as morning anchor and talk show host, Washington dabbles in the world of film. His popular "Keepin' it Reel" segments feature movie reviews and interviews with prominent Hollywood "A-listers". Washington has seen the evolution of the industry in his years of experience.
