Degree Completion Information

BS Radiologic Technology
Radiologic technologists are allied health professionals who have expertise in the operation of x-rays to diagnose and treat patients.  Graduates of radiologic technology programs may choose to specialize in nuclear medicine, sonography, radiation therapy, cardiovascular interventional radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography, positron emission tomography, and mammography. Graduates may choose to pursue careers in management, sales, administration or teaching within their field. Admission into the radiologic technology professional portion (hospital based) of these programs is not automatic or guaranteed; outstanding scholastic achievement is required.  In addition students are responsible for obtaining specific admissions requirements for desired programs.

Accredited Programs in Radiography

Academic Good Standing in Medical Imaging
A student in the radiologic technology program must maintain the following standards for academic good standing and to progress successfully through the program.

  1. The student must maintain an overall 2.5 QPA in core course requirements.
  2. The student must achieve a grade of C or higher in each core course.

Internal Transfer Students
Students majoring in other academic disciplines at Gwynedd-Mercy College may apply to transfer into radiologic technology. This application process is managed by student’s current academic advisor. These students must meet minimum guidelines: GPA of 2.5, minimum grades of C in any core courses that have been taken. Students will be contacted for an interview. If accepted into the program, notification will be forwarded to the Office of Academic Advisement.

External Transfer Students
At this time, we are only accepting external transfer students who have completed less than 30 credits or have successfully completed a JRCERT accredited radiologic technology program.

Options

Standard 2+2 Option: Students complete a minimum of 60 credits (2 years) at Gwynedd-Mercy College and then transfer to a hospital-based certificate program. Courses taken at Gwynedd-Mercy College include science, math/computer courses, general education as well as GMC signature courses. It is recommended that students apply to accredited radiologic technology programs in the sophomore year.  There are over twenty such programs in Pennsylvania. Most radiography/radiologic technology clinical programs are 22-24 months in duration. Upon successful completion of one of these radiologic technology programs, students are awarded a bachelor degree in radiologic technology from Gwynedd-Mercy College.  Popular local programs include the following: Abington Memorial Hospital, Albert Einstein Medical Center, Saint Christopher’s Hospital for Children, The Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, and Crozer-Chester Medical Center.

Thomas Jefferson University College of Health Professions: After successfully completing the required prerequisites as outlined by TJU students are eligible to transfer to the two-year multicompetency program at Thomas Jefferson. A 3.0 GPA is necessary to be considered for this program.  TJU offers 10 different majors of which a student chooses two.  In this option, students earn their bachelor degree from Jefferson, not from Gwynedd-Mercy College. See www.jefferson.edu/jchp/di or contact the radiologic technology advisor for more information.

Reverse Bachelors: Students who already have a certificate or associate degree in radiography from an accredited JRCERT program may obtain a BS from Gwynedd-Mercy College in radiologic technology.

The general advice section below is provided in hope that it will provide guidance to prospective students and ultimately steer them towards success.
