As a learning community, our faculty are challenged to explore, incorporate, and become proficient in innovative, technology-enriched best practices for teaching and learning. Academic Technology at Gwynedd Mercy University strives to build and support the community by emphasizing collaborative teaching and learning technologies integrated into the classroom. Gwynedd Mercy University faculty members are trained in, encouraged, and motivated to use a variety of tools for both online and face-to-face instruction.
Adobe Connect is Gwynedd Mercy University's premier web-conferencing service and allows users to host online conferences, meetings and classes. With an Adobe Connect account, a web-camera and a computer or laptop connected to the Internet, faculty members can conduct classes anywhere in world. Guest lectures, keynote speakers, distance education students, and entire external classes have the ability to connect, share resources and collaborate. Class sessions may also be pre-recorded and upload to Blackboard for anytime, anywhere access.
Blackboard, Gwynedd Mercy University's Learning Management System (LMS), is an online learning environment in which instructors place course materials, resources, websites assignments, lesson plans, tasks, directions, etc. in a course shell arranged in such as way as to construct shared learning activities. Used as both a supplement to face-to-face instruction and for fully online learning, Blackboard's features include interactive components that are both synchronous and asynchronous. Online discussion boards are real-time chat sessions excellent methods for group interactivity, connecting instructor to student, student to student, and student to the outside world.
Faculty members receive training in the use of Blackboard as a teaching tool and as a repository of course content. Each student enrolled into the administrative system and assigned to a course receives a Blackboard account. As long as Internet access is accessible, users are able to participate in courses, and are connected globally.

The Online Consortium of Independent Colleges and Universities (OCICU) is a 70 member consortium of learning institutions which have access to over 750 online courses. These courses are developed and taught by twelve or so provider institutions.
Students at Gwynedd Mercy University may enroll in these courses and the credit hours count as courses on the student's transcripts. Students must receive approval from their advisors, the school dean, and the Vice President for Academic Affairs.
Gwynedd Mercy University's Online Learning programs are expanding to include graduate offerings in the Schools of Business, Education, and Nursing. Online courses are taught by online certified instructors and uses Blackboard LMS as the primary delivery modality.
Smart Classrooms consist of a data projector, a Smart board, and a computer workstation. Smart Classrooms feature an interactive projection system in which all content and functionality of the computer is displayed before a wider audience. Instructors or presenters may annotate directly on the Smartboard allowing the flexibility of the whiteboard to be integrated into classroom instruction. Course materials, lesson plans, websites, e-books, images, Flash programs, and shared courseware can be developed in Smart Notebook (a native Smart application). Entire projects may be saved and stored as .pdf documents, PowerPoints, or web pages and placed into Blackboard for lesson retention and lesson revision. On the main campus, the majority of classrooms have Smartboards, while all learning areas also do have data projection screens.
Gwynedd Mercy Technology Workshops
A variety of learning technology training workshops are held during the fall, spring, and summer semesters in both face-to-face and online formats and are scheduled in large classroom labs and in smaller venues such as the TLT lab on the main campus. Training sessions include Blackboard, Microsoft Office, course design, and a host of web-based learning technologies. General announcements are placed on the Gwynedd Mercy University portal and a link is provided in which interested members may sign up for a particular session.
